5 Tips to Create a Dog-Friendly Backyard

All good pet owners love the sight of their dog happily romping in the grass, but when it comes to the backyard, you don’t have to have acres of meadow to create a space that will please your pup. If you provide your four-legged friend with a few important amenities, he or she is sure to be in doggie heaven.

The Set-Up

Create boundaries. Your first priority should always be safety. Surround your backyard with a sturdy fence that is high enough that your dog can’t jump over (six feet is recommended to contain big dogs). A solid fence, as opposed to chain link, can reduce a dog’s desire to bark at people and other dogs, since he won’t see much to bark at. An alternative to a fenced-in backyard is a fenced dog run.

Provide shade and shelter. Did you know dogs can be sunburned and suffer from heatstroke? Even if you live in a mild climate, your dog should be able to retreat to the shade of a tree or awning. Have a place for play. Encourage your dog to stay fit and healthy by providing as much space as possible to run and chase. Try creating paths where he can wander, patrol, prowl and explore. A tired dog is a happy dog!
