It's Grilling Season! Stay Safe by Following These Propane Tank Precautions

Now that the weather is warm, it’s time for grill masters to get out their favorite barbeque equipment and start sizzling. However, if you use a gas grill, you should also know some important safety tips related to propane tanks and grills.

Safely Handle Propane Tanks

Did you know that propane tanks have an expiration date? Propane tanks of 10 gallons or less expire 12 years from the date of manufacture. You can find the manufacture date stamped into the collar along the top of the tank. At the 12-year mark, you can either exchange the tank for a replacement, or have it recertified for an additional five years. This ensures that propane isn’t stored in a container that will leak or cause an explosion.

When transporting a propane tank, ensure the cylinder valve is completely closed and keep the tank in an upright position in a well-ventilated area of the vehicle. Do not leave a tank containing propane inside a hot vehicle (120 degrees or higher). Heat causes pressure inside the tank to build, and can lead to propane leaks and flash fires or explosions.

Proper Storage of Grills & Tanks

Keep in mind that propane tanks should not be stored in a shed, garage, basement or attic, or brought indoors for any reason – they should only be stored in a dry, open, well-ventilated area outdoors. It is only safe to store your propane tank inside if it has been completely emptied of propane. Keeping a tank indoors can raise the temperature inside the tank, which can be a fire hazard. Never leave your propane tank in your vehicle.

In the off-season, keep dust and debris from collecting on your grill by covering it with a grill cover or a piece of tarp secured with rope. Store a freestanding grill in a dry, cool area of the garage or shed to keep it from rusting. If you want a storage shed for a grill, check out the exceptionally durable products from LP® Outdoor Building Solutions® that can make your storage building or other structure a cut above the rest.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, an annual average of 8,900 home fires are started by grilling, with most incidents occurring from May through August. Don’t let a fire put out your grilling season! Check out these additional grilling safety tips.
