LP® SmartSide® Trim & Siding's Environmental Product Declaration
LP Building Solutions is committed to providing our customers with sustainable siding solutions backed by significant investments in ongoing initiatives and innovations. For LP, Building a Better World™ means manufacturing environmentally responsible products like LP® SmartSide® Trim and Siding—a carbon-negative technology.
LP Launches Environmental Product Declaration
In celebration of National Sustainability Day, LP is proud to announce the launch of our first-ever LP® SmartSide® Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). Findings summarized within the EPD are a result of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study conducted by LP and outlines what LP SmartSide products are made of, as well as their impact on the environment from resource extraction to customer distribution.
This information can be used by building professionals industry-wide to evaluate material choices for projects when looking to reduce their carbon footprint. This is an effort on behalf of LP’s Siding business to highlight LP’s dedication to ensuring its raw materials and manufacturing processes follow the highest standards of environmental stewardship.
LP® SmartSide® Products Aren’t Just Carbon-Neutral, They’re Carbon-Negative
LP SmartSide products are classified as a carbon-negative exterior cladding product, which means they store more carbon in the product than is released during raw material sourcing, manufacturing and customer distribution.
Our carbon-negative technology starts with sourcing a hardwood tree species called trembling aspen, which quickly and naturally regenerates from its root systems, keeping the forest healthy and sustainable. As these materials move into production to become trim and siding products, LP uses over 99% of the log in either the finished product or thermal heating processes, creating very little waste.
Unlike LP SmartSide, non-wood based siding products analyzed were all found to have a higher net global warming potential (GWP). “LP SmartSide products store carbon for generations, making them a smart choice as a sustainable building material,” said LP Director of Sustainability & Public Policy Donna Kopecky. “When customers choose sustainable wood building products over more energy-intensive building alternatives, such as concrete or steel, they are making more responsible, climate-friendly choices that can benefit the environment over the long-term.”
LP Adheres to Forest Sustainability Standards
In addition to the EPD of LP SmartSide, LP is committed to ensuring that all LP-manufactured products contain wood material that has been responsibly sourced. To maintain these standards, LP is certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®). One hundred percent of the wood fiber delivered to LP facilities is managed through our sustainable sourcing program and over 12 million acres in Canada are sustainably managed by LP under long-term forest management plans.
LP has a long history of sustainability and ensures its sourcing and manufacturing processes are sustainable, as well as its building materials, to do its part in caring for the world. “The LP SmartSide Environmental Product Declaration is just one of many initiatives we invest in to uphold our commitment to making a positive environmental impact within the building industry,” said Neil Sherman, LP Executive Vice President of Siding.
